1.What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Honestly, I’ve never thought about it before. I spend my time in the prison Zagerah hunting down and killing prisoners. There was one prisoner that had evaded Hindah – my leader – for a long time and I was the Hunter who ended up catching and killing him. I suppose that counts.
2. What is your best physical feature?
My red-gold eyes. All the other Hunters have black eyes but mine are red-gold. It’s the trait that goes with my Hunter ability; to see through things and read people’s thoughts and emotions.
3. What is your most treasured possession?
My Inquiri blade. They’re special swords that only Hunters can wield because of our power.
4. What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Love isn’t a part of my life as a Hunter and it never has been. All I remember is being in Zagerah, killing. That’s it.
5. What is your favorite journey?
I’m not sure. Zagerah’s a massive place with lots of different places to go, every single one of them dangerous. Personally, I like anywhere that isn’t too dark, like the Shadow Forest or the Caves. The Mountain Plateaus are alright if you don’t mind climbing. The glass pyramid makes it too easy to kill the prisoners hiding there.
6. What is your most marked characteristic?
Definitely my red-gold eyes. It’s the first thing people tend to notice and it’s what they remember most about me. When I kill, I can hear their thoughts and emotions. I can’t tell you how many times my red-gold eyes have been the last thing they saw or thought of before the end.
7. Define happiness and share your happiest memory.
Happiness? I’m not sure what that is; I don’t think I’ve ever experienced it. I mean, I like killing. I don’t like playing or toying with the prisoners like some of the other Hunters do, but sometimes hunting them is fun. They don’t put up a good fight usually, but sometimes the fights can be a challenge and that’s what I like.
8. What is it that you most dislike?
9. What is your greatest fear?
Having my weakness used against me. All Hunters have one and none of us know what that is for other Hunters – except me, since I can read minds.
10. What is your greatest extravagance?
Hindah doesn’t know this, but sometimes, I climb on top of some of the tallest trees, as high as I can. Then I gaze up at the night sky and wonder… Is there anything else out there? Anything besides Zagerah and killing?
11. Who do you most despise?
Death. I hate being the one to have to feel every moment as a prisoner dies. The fear, their terror, the cold…
12. What is your greatest regret?
I’ve never thought about this before. Do I regret anything? I think the better question would be: what don’t I regret?
13. Which talent would you most like to have?
One of the other Hunters, Malik can fly. I always wondered what that would be like.
14. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
How easy it is to obey Hindah’s orders. I’ve thought about this a few times, even when I disagree with him, usually, I’ll end up doing what he wants anyway and sometimes I wonder… Why?
15. What do you most value in your friends?
None of the Hunters are really friends – not quite sure what that means. We aren’t all buddy-buddy with each other. What we do trust is our ability to obey Hindah’s orders and kill without hesitation.
16. Who do you most admire?
Admire? I don’t know. None of the Hunters; I don’t know what would be admired about us, other than how good we are at killing. There is this one prisoner though. He’s old and you’d think he would have died by now, but he’s still out there in Zagerah somewhere.
17. What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Strength. Sometimes speed is more useful.
18. Which words or phrases are you known for?
I’m not too known for using any particular words or phrases, but I’m known as the observer. I’m always watching everyone and everything and listening to people’s thoughts.
19. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Anything other than what I am.
20. What is your motto?
Get the job done as quick and efficient as possible.
About the Book:
A reckless young woman named Averella does what no woman has ever done.
She disguises herself as a man and purposefully gets herself arrested and thrown into Zagerah. Her brother Gabriel was taken, and with his disease, he will not survive on his own. She has no idea what to expect inside the prison; all she knows is that once men get taken, they never come back.
The Hunters will find her.
Genetically altered to be faster and stronger than humans, the Hunters use their powers to find and kill every prisoner who enters Zagerah. The only ones who can defeat them, are in fact, themselves.
Jared is a Hunter. It’s all he’s known, all he remembers. He kills ruthlessly and without regret, one prisoner after another. When a new prisoner Dalex shows up, everything begins to change. Jared goes undercover to make Dalex and the other prisoners believe he is one of them, a prisoner himself.
No one knows the truth.
He will trick them.
Toy with them.
Then, he will kill them.
The last prisoner glared up at me and took out a bow. He knew how quickly I would move, so he took little time to aim before he shot. I stayed perfectly still, and when he noticed I refused to move, he looked somewhat surprised. I easily caught the arrow with my right hand and threw it back toward the prisoner. He didn’t have time to jump out of the way. The mixture of the darkness and his weak, human eyesight was his downfall. The arrow buried itself in his left side and he fell to the ground, gasping and groaning, trying to catch a breath.
With the fighting over, I didn’t have to even concentrate to feel the feelings radiating off all the prisoners below me. Two of them were already dead. The boy Luke wasn’t quite dead yet, just barely grasping life. I could feel every ounce of his cold fear… not fear of the unknown, like most of them got. No, this was fear for his father, for what he was going to do without him, if he would live, or give up. His life faded, beating, almost like the faint sounds of his heart.
The prisoner who had been hit with the arrow had waves of confusion, fear, and anger consuming him. It was slowly replaced by icy terror until it was all he could feel.
Luke’s breaths began getting more spaced apart. The beats of his heart, though they were loud in my ears, grew faint and slow until there was finally nothing.
