About the Book
Alicia Stamois’s family is damaged. One dark night shattered their world. She loves her family beyond measure and is willing to go to irrational extremes to put her broken loved ones back together. Alicia’s a shrink who knows how to play head games better than most, so she puts her training to work on a scheme. Her plot includes a pen pal, a prison, and a proper punishment. For Alicia, love matters most.
I was out for my nightly run and became his victim. I passed the oldest cemetery in the area, which always gave me the creeps because the gravestones weren’t right. They were mostly blank from being weather worn, cracked from vandalism, or because they were just thin slabs rather than the thick granite that’s used as headstones today, and they leaned askew because of the upheaval of the ground. Then he jumped out from behind a gnarly tree and grabbed me. I never even have time to reach for my pepper spray that I always kept attached to my house keys.
He dragged me behind the tree while I struggled to get away. I dug my sneakers into the ground as hard as I could to slow his efforts to move me out of sight of the road. I screamed and screamed. He muzzled my mouth with his huge hands. I bit into one of his hands, which was covered by some kind of knitted glove. Frantic to make him leave me alone, I pulled with my teeth and managed to rip one of the gloves off his hand. I bit down hard then, and it was his turn to scream.
“Get off me,” I shouted. “Help. Help. Somebody help me!”
It was then he bit my neck. Is this a freaking vampire? AIDS? WTF? Get. Off. Of. Me. I thought. I smelled his putrid sweat. Why was he sweating on this chilly night? I wondered. He reeked of booze. I wanted to vomit. I gagged.
He grabbed my neck and squeezed so hard I thought he was going to rip my head off, but I forced myself to wrestle away from his hands and holler some more. Somebody, please. Anybody.
That’s when he released one hand from my neck and just when I thought I could wiggle my way free, I saw a huge chunk of what looked like a broken piece of headstone coming right at me. I shifted my head to the side. The stone moved so fast, and I was helpless to stop it. I reached for it, but he cupped both my hands into one huge hand. As I shrieked one last time, I was encased in blackness.
When I came to, I was strapped to a bed, and I was sure the creep had taken me to his place and tied me up in his house. I thrashed around, but couldn’t get myself free. I screamed again thinking he’d taken me prisoner, but not a sound came from my throat. He had hurt my vocal chords by choking me so hard.
