Emilia a betrothed virgin, crosses paths with the Prince of Darkness.
He lusts after her and has the wealth and power to acquire what he craves.
Yet Vlad wants her to desire him as much as he does her.
Lives change when Emilia understands why she’s Dracula’s Choice.
Dracula had a gold-trimmed carriage waiting with a coachman and four white steeds, and Maria packed my trunks into the back. I hugged Mamă with all my strength. She cried openly. I faced my father and said, “You did this to me. You’re as much of a monster as he is.” He looked away. Hannah and Juliet cried when I squeezed them tight.
“I’m not going to be too far away. You can visit. I can visit you. Don’t cry,” I urged them. Will I ever see them again?
Maria and my family and the guests, mostly relatives who remained, waved their farewells, and Dracula and I took off into the night beneath the thin light of the moon. We’d traveled just a few miles when we came upon a wooded area. There was a shortcut, Dracula told me and instructed the driver to take it, and so we took that route. I wondered then if Darius would realize that we’d gone off the beaten path.
Darius. Here I am thinking of him, hoping he’ll find me while I’m riding side by side with whom? My captor, my future husband, my enchanter?
Suddenly, the sound of rapid horse hooves broke the silence of the night. Darius rode alongside the carriage and pulled the coachman from his seat. I screamed as the carriage horses sped on wild in the night. Dracula bolted out of the carriage, up to the driver’s seat and grabbed the reins. The horses slowed at his command, but Darius knocked Dracula to the ground and the horses ran again. My skirt flying behind me, I leapt to the seat and handled the reins, slowing the frantic horses thanks to the carriage training my father had given me. He never wanted his daughters to be frail, yet he is old-fashioned enough to think he could choose my spouse for me. It makes no sense.
I turned the horses around and hurried to the spot where Darius had overtaken Dracula. The men were struggling. Darius’s horse had run off in the chaos. In a flash, Dracula was on top of my Darius. I watched as he held him down and bent his head to Darius’s neck. Within a minute, Darius’s struggles ceased. He lay lifeless and pale on the ground below me.
I heard Dracula scream, “Aylin!”
“Darius!” I screamed.
Dracula turned to me, and even in the dim light of the half moon, I could see his maroon eyes transform into garnet daggers. They glowed. There was blood dripping from his mouth. Darius’s blood, I knew. Before I could think to hustle the horses away and escape, Dracula grabbed the lead horse’s harness and stopped their movement. He hoisted himself onto the coachman’s seat. I shuttered and moved to escape, but he grabbed my arm with a fierceness I hadn’t known before. When I turned to take a close look at this monster that was to rule my life, I saw that his pale skin had faded. His arms and face pulsated, running deep red blood through every vein I could see. I had no doubt it was happening everywhere.
“You killed him, you, monster. You killed my Darius,” I screamed and pounded with both fists on his chest so hard it hurt me.
