Spotlight: Poet and Author D. Gabrielle Jensen

D. Gabrielle Jensen is an emerging poet who loves music and making art. Remember you met her first right here.

Fast Five with the poet

What are you working on next?

I almost always have several projects going at once but there is one I’m simultaneously extremely excited to talk about and extremely hesitant to let it loose on the world in its current state, lest someone run off with it. The most I’m comfortable saying is it is a collection of personal and intimate conversations with musicians.

Everyone has a dream mate. What’s yours look like? Do you ever expect to find him/her?

Dark hair and deep eyes, the color of which is less important than what they express. Smaller side of average – I am not a girl who needs to feel protected by a partner. I am more attracted to men closer to my size. 5’5-5’10, trimmed or naturally thin; I’m not enticed by bulging, rippling muscles. I am drawn to tattoos and ripped jeans, rebels, musicians, and “bad boys” (not to be confused with jerks, which are, believe it or not, their own category altogether; there is a distinction). As for finding him, I already have, a few times. My current collection of poetry centers around two of them.

If you could be anything other than what you are, what occupation would you choose?

In terms of occupation, I am a cosmetologist by day and a writer all the time. Ideally, I guess I aspire to be a full-time novelist and part-time music journalist, writing while on the road with bands. I would get to write, travel, and hang out with musicians (and yes, I know it can be utterly horrible sometimes; I have no romantic delusions).

Name your greatest fear.

Mediocrity. I have always known I was meant for big, change-the-world level things. It terrifies me that I don’t yet know how I’m going to achieve that or that my impact won’t be realized until after I’ve died.

And drowning.

Do you have any scars, tattoos, distinguishing marks?

Several. I have a keloid scar on my right knee that’s 20+ years old and still hurts if I bump it wrong. I have ten tattoos – with plans for several more – eight of which are, in some way, connected to music. Lyrics, illustrations of lyrics… one is simply the word “LOVE” in a favorite musician’s handwriting.

About the Author

Born and reared in the rural mountains of Colorado, D. Gabrielle Jensen has always felt drawn to bigger things, feeling more at home in the commotion of a city than in the serenity of a small town. Small towns, she laments, make her feel claustrophobic.

When she is not writing – which is most of the time, even if she is not near her keyboard or holding a pencil – she is bringing art to the world through cosmetology, jewelry design, photography, and the occasional spare pencil sketch. Music drifts into every aspect of her life, even if not in the creation of, it is always playing, always inspiring.

She loves things that begin with the letter “C” – coffee, cats, conversation, cities, concerts, crowds, chaos – and things that don’t – airports, traveling, other humans, macro photography, urban decay, macro photography of urban decay, the beauty of flaw.
