She introduced herself as Elvira. If I closed my eyes tight enough, I could see her. A thin leather cord held the upper half of her black hair back. Her once white pinafore covered an ankle length blue checked dress. I expected black boots on her feet, but they were bare. She slipped in my bedroom window in the early morning hours, tickled me from my feet to my chin, and whispered stories in my ear until the sun threatened to rise.

“Who are you talking to?”

My boyfriend’s eyes burned through me. We met on a full moon night two weeks before, but like all new couples, we had a lot to learn. His intensity and his open passion attracted me, but his faith kept me. This was my first real encounter with the other world, and I didn’t know how to share it.

“Elvira.”

I waited, and let my eyes wander over every inch of his handsome face. Despite his poker face, I finally saw what I sought in his eyes. The slightest powder green claimed the outer edges of his otherwise mahogany eyes. Jealousy hid behind his curiosity. We survived the crazy ex-girlfriend who showed up at the door fresh from the looney bin a week ago, but this was a different sort of crazy. This bordered on hallucination, and I questioned it myself.

He broke my stare and cast his eyes to the wall beside us. “She visits a lot.”

My heart leaped to my throat. My tongue wet my dry lips. I studied the cracks in the wood floor. “Every night now.” The words squeaked out so low, I barely heard them.

His eyebrows met over his nose. Cloudy concern replaced the power green in his eyes. “Is she still here?”

I closed my eyes and searched the room. Elvira had a knack for pretending she disappeared whenever Jimmy came around. He’d leave the room, and she’d jump out like an over-excited child in a hide and seek game. Sometimes, she’d hide just beyond my window. Her gray shadow tinted the window until I returned to the room.
